Fishing in Scotland

Salmond fishing in Scotland presents no difficulties for anyone in the know and at the right time can be highly satisfying. We all understand how a salmond will go for a bright and flashy lure dropped in upstream and floating down in the roiling current of the Scottish National rivers. But salmonds are slippery and they can jump. It’s well known in Scotland that a ‘jumping fish is nay a takking fish’ and no one can be sure to take one. Anyway, even if you did, it might turn out to be a kelt, retiring on its way back downstream and escaping into the freedom of open waters. But in Scotland it’s illegal to fish for kelts and it is considered bad form to take one out of the river – after all it’s done its job upstream and now needs time to recover.

But that’s OK because there are other fish in the Scottish National rivers. They are pretty rare but if you play your cards right you might catch a Sturgeon. They are quite small in Scotland, not like the big ones from Russia. The trouble is, they can be deceptive. One minute they are what they seem and in the next - well, they’re on the hook and seem to be an entirely different kettle of fish. Sturgeons are resilient fish and even once they are hooked, they have to be played fiercely because they fight like a highlander.

Scots wa hey and all that, Scotland shall be free.

(A Kelt is a salmon that has already spawned and is on its way to the open sea, spent and exhausted., often recognised from the maggots in their gills and their lack of fight)
